On March 15, Bradford pleaded guilty to operating while intoxicated third offense as he appeared in front of Judge David Thompson. ![]() Thompson also said Bradford has been convicted of 21 misdemeanors and four felony convictions, many that were alcohol related. He also said Bradford was taking proper steps by addressing both his alcohol use issues alongside his mental health.īradford apologized to the court and said that the incident was a “wakeup call.” “It would be easy to sit up here and say ‘You know what, he only did those things as a way of mitigating his behavior and his hopes of staying out of jail.’ But your efforts thus far appear to be sincere and (you) appear to really desire a life that’s free of alcohol,” Thompson said prior to sentencing. Thompson said that some of the positives that Bradford has going for him are that he sought treatment and graduated this month after 59 days from the Bear River Health program. She said the sobriety court program provides structure as well as a lot of accountability, which is something that “he knows that he desperately needs that to set him on the right path for the rest of his life.” “He is making the choice to stay sober but he knows he needs that additional help and he has sought that out.” “He knows that ultimately no matter how much help he gets from the courts, from his family, from Catholic Human Services, from the help he got at the rehab and from community mental health - it is ultimately his choice to drink or not,” Dull said prior to sentencing. The program is open to nonviolent offenders who meet a list of eligibility requirements. ![]() The program mandates steps such as support group meetings, random drug and alcohol testing, and offers guided support. However recent criminal justice reforms have also been emphasizing alternatives to incarceration and connecting people with mental health and/or addiction services and programs.īradford’s attorney, Lesya Dull, noted at Bradford’s sentencing that he had completed a Bear River Health substance use addiction recovery program and he is expecting to enter into the 85th District Sobriety Court program as well. Part of probation means he is expected to complete the 85th District Sobriety Court program.Ī felony operating while intoxicated charge is punishable by up to to five years in prison. ![]() However, the remainder of his jail sentence was suspended as long as he follows all his probation terms. Bradford was ordered to complete three years of probation.īradford was sentenced to serve 10 months in the Manistee County Jail with credit for three days served.
